How to Snorkel
Before diving in the water snorkeling, you should put the mask and get familiarized with it and practice breathing in the snorkel. This is a good way to deal with some anxiety before diving in for the real deal. The best way to begin in the water, should be in shallow water first. This will give you a chance to try putting your face under the water, and still have the ability to get up if you panic. Doing it not in deep waters is the best way to get to know how the gear really works, with less danger. One thing which is a must and not that difficult, is how to clear the mask and snorkel of water. This is a skill that must be learned, when your in the water, the water always goes in through the end of the snorkel and water sometime goes in the mask. If you’re a beginner and the water goes in the snorkel, it can be pretty frightening.
How to Clear snorkel
This can be done very easily. When the snorkel begins to fill with water, blow out as hard as possible through the snorkel, and the force of wind that passes through the snorkel will push the water out through the top. If your not comfortable with all of this, there are snorkels with valves in them that allows the water to be pushed out the valve.
How to clear the mask
This is done in the same fashion as the snorkel, except it’s a bit harder, reason being it diminishes the quality of the vision. Clearing the mask, the head comes up from the water and pull the mask out from the face. This you do only a little bit from the bottom, where the water will start to come out. Again you can purchase a mask like the snorkel, that has a valve in it. This lets the water run out with out you doing anything. The one way valve keeps water from coming in, but allows it to go out. Once you get use to all of this type of training, the next thing is doing it in the open waters where the ground can’t be reached. This you would want to use snorkeling fins. The fins help you to move around comfortably while your face is under water. To do this, start to kick your legs in the water with an easy movement ‘flutter stroke’. If done in proper order, the kick is very quick and efficient. The kicks should be slow and at a medium pace, with the fin being under water at all times.
